The Game - Save the Poudre June Rise Contest

Every spring, the Cache la Poudre River rises as mountain snows melt. Some years there is abundant snow and the river's flow is high enough to clean and refresh the river. Other years we have a dry winter and, because there are lots of diversions, there may be hardly any water left in the river in Fort Collins and the river suffers. Regardless, every year at some point the river hits its "peak" snowmelt-driven flow, when the water is at its highest, usually in June -- thus "June Rise" -- but ranging from about May 15th through June. After that, water levels drop.

What will the river do in 2010? You be the judge in Save The Poudre's Second Annual June Rise Contest. Guess when the Poudre River runoff will peak at the USGS Canyon Mouth Gage, as well as how much the actual peak flow will be in cubic feet per second (cfs). Enter our contest to win great prizes by buying a $10 ticket.

The Prizes

There will be two sets of winners, one set for the closest day and time, and one set for the closest peak flow value. We extend our warmest thanks for donated prizes. (Large items must be picked up in Fort Collins.)

Helpful Hints

Guessing the correct date and amount of the Poudre's June Rise peak flow will be challenging. So much depends on the snowpack and soil moisture and on specific weather conditions, such as rainfall, during the melt. Fortunately, the Internet is loaded with lots of information that may help you decide.

The Rules

1. You may enter as many times as you wish. The cost is $10 for each entry. Each entry must be filled out completely, including: NAME, PHONE NUMBER, EMAIL ADDRESS and PEAK DATE/TIME GUESS (to the nearest 15 minutes, e.g., June 9, 9:15 am) or PEAK FLOW GUESS (in cubic feet per second, e.g., 1075 cfs)

2. All entries must be submitted by 11:59 pm MDT, May 31st, 2010. Entries may also be mailed to: Save The Poudre, c/o Sierra Club, Poudre Canyon Group, P.O. Box 20, Fort Collins, CO 80522. All checks mailed must be made payable to "Save the Poudre."

3. Winners will be announced after the flow reaches its May 15-June 30 peak. In the event of a tie, the earliest correct entry will win. The judges' decision, based on peak discharge (not stage) data available on July 1, 2010, will be final.
